Betype’s Against Cancer by Byron Galan.

Byron’s Mom was diagnosed with Uterine Cancer stage 3, so he made an Indiegogo campaign to help her with the treatment.

“Byron: I made this poster to promote my campaign, I want to capture the attention of the young people that aren’t aware of Cancer by making a contrast of concepts, sometimes we are pissed off by little things as a dropped ice cream or youtube restrictions but if you stop and think how many people have hard problems in the world like cancer you will think twice before getting anger. Is far more easy to capture your attention with a simple and cute icon of a funny thing than showing the word in all caps: CANCER.”

Even when the Indiegogo’s campaign achieve the goal, you can still donate, as he said: “you know $5k is a small amount if you think at the whole treatment, so you can still donate the real goal is surpass the $5k and hit the $10k”.

Here is a great example of a beautifully laid out promotional book. The reason this works well is because it has a great balance of typography and visual elements and he has used a great grid structure showing his keen sense of detail. the bold crispness of the print finish makes his work stand out well agains the white space of the page’s canvas. The little visual elements to describe his skills in certain programs is something to take note of as it shows that extra finishing touch to add interest to the page and make his skills seem more important and i should attempt something like this.

A Tumblr project dedicated to recreating old memories using photographs, Dear Photograph is filled with awe inspiring, beautiful stories. On their blog it says, “Take a picture of a picture, from the past, in the present.”

Here’s the story for the first image:

Dear Photograph,
My grandfather used to take all of us kids for rides in the wheelbarrow. It was fun and exciting at a young age. Later on, he’d take us for rides in the car. Finally, it was us taking him for rides in the car, then in the wheelchair. He was my sunshine. Tomorrow, we’ll take a final ride with him to the cemetery. I will miss his smiles, which he gave us freely even at the end when he wasn’t able to speak. I promise to take my kids for rides in unconventional vehicles - it was a magical feeling. Thanks for the rides Grandpa.

I first initially chose to do the documenting group with Gary although I enjoyed the sessions and built up after effect skills I become uncertain whether to change over to web as this would be more valuable to me in terms of progressing to build my own site for future reference. After speaking to Tash she was ok for me to switch just as long as i could catch up. I made a great start on researching and finding inspiration for my own site and soon began designing it with help along the way from the lovely Jason and Gary from Shape. after a few tweaks here and there I began coding with the help from Jules, who was very patient with me in helping me to achieve the final outcome. I valued his time very much and the skills he had taught me also.

However after many sessions and trying to teach myself the ins and outs of coding I didn’t get to finish the coding side and have my site go live. Looking at the designs I had created for my website I began to feel uncertain that my design was good enough, so I went back to the drawing board and began sketching out further design ideas and layouts. After many attempts on mocking up the designs with trial and error I finally came to design that ticked all the boxes and which I was happy with.

Evaluation of Year

I feel I have settled well into the course at Salford as a newcomer, everyone has been so friendly, helpful and welcoming, it feels like I have been here for much longer and become part of a design time with them. Although there are certain elements within my work and using my time efficiently that still need to be pushed overall this year I know that I have had more fun with my work and delved into development overcoming problems and solutions along the way. This year I have spent more time utilising my sketchbook, being more creative and stepping away from the Mac , enabling a different approach and outcome to my final design pieces.

I aim to push myself even harder in the final stretch of NMP and give it my all in terms of work, quality and time.

So before we went to the ‘We made’ event last night Jemma Davidge showed off her beautiful wooden blocks that she had made for her visual piece towards her dissertation. For the event last night she took time to create herself a box, wrap sheet and label, so she could show them to the designers in the portfolio session. Absolutely stunning to look at as a whole, time and effort that have gone into these blocks and packaging have defiantly paid off.

Some photographs of mine and Gians invitation idea with logo by Megan. We looked at producing something that they interacted with although the stamp itself is not here. Feedback was good in it at the show meeting, but there a few improvements to make, such as box dimensions. This will not be difficult to adjust and quite enjoy making net designs. I have been told to leave this for a while and get on with my FMP.

Brilliant night at WE MADE A PUB QUIZ. Excellent atmosphere to speak to industry and show portfolios. Had some great positive feedback on my portfolio, so I was really chuffed.

To top it all our team the ‘Cobrian’s’ won the Pub Quiz!!! Go Cobrians…..

These pictures are great Megan! This was our team at the pub quiz (WE WON!!) What a great night it was mixing with industry and getting tips and tricks for job hunting and portfolio displays. Included in our team where industry professionals ‘Rocknine Creative’. They were a small business team of 2 with one employed worker, they were lovely people. It makes you realise that industry professionals are not scary people and generally are there to help. I got great advice and comments on my design work and especially on my Earlybird typeface. The main pointers that i made to the industry where that i need to broaden my portfolio to all formats as currently it is very type orientated. I realise that it is very hard to get a job just as a typographer, so i need to also find other things in graphics that i like just as much. Another question i asked was that applying for jobs before you have graduated is difficult as what do you put for you degree qualification, the answer was lie!! What a great night it was al round!

Semester 1 - DOCU / WEB

So starting off in the motion option I decided a few weeks down the line that I should have chose web design. So I switched over and did my best to catch up in lessons. I designs a couple of basic website but then after speaking with Andy I looked further into website inspiration and what was out there to make mine more than just basic. The lovely Jules spent time helping me code whilst teaching me too. So from the home page which Jules helped me with I did my best to then create the other pages by myself, although it is unfinished and parts in the wrong places, I am very pleased with my progression it was a challenge that I needed as I have never coded a website before.

Semester 2 - WEB

I have since redesigned my website as seen above, although it is not live I am happy with the final outcome, its clean, informative and shows my work in a professional manner. I feel my web designing skills have progressed although the coding side I still continue to self teach.
